Tier 2 Mosquito AAA Provincials

After finishing second in the tough Lower Mainland league, the Mosquito AAA Tier 2 Angels headed to Duncan for the Provincial Championships.  The Angels started the tournament off by facing Island #1 Oceanside (Parksville).  Oceanside came out strong scoring 4 runs in the first, but the Angels managed to keep the score close going into the fifth trailing 7-4.  In the fifth, the Oceanside bats came alive again scoring 4 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth.  Abbotsford couldn’t get the rally they needed and ended up losing 13-4.

Provincials (3)

In their second game, the Angels squared off against West Kelowna.  This being the second game of the day for both teams, it was a bit of a slow moving affair.  The game was never in doubt as Abbotsford scored 4 runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.  The final score was 18-6 for Abbotsford.

Saturday brought two crucial games as the Angels knew they would need to win both in order to make it to the semi-finals.  The first game of the day saw the Angels take on league rival POCO.  These two teams faced each other twice previously this summer, with each team winning one.  As with the two previous games, this one was a close match.  With the score 2-1 Abbotsford, POCO managed 4 runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead.  The Angels worked hard and had bases loaded twice, but couldn’t manage any more runs losing 5-2.  The loss eliminated the Angels from semi-final contention.

Knowing they wouldn’t be moving on, the Angels still had one more game to play against a strong Prince George team that looked as though they might take the tournament.  Although a win couldn’t change the standings, the Angels refused to play anything less than their best baseball.  Thanks to an Abbotsford crowd that brought a Saturday night feeling to the game with their raucous cheering, the Angels managed to find the energy for a great game.  After a close three innings, the score was 6-5 for Prince George.  The teams traded 4 runs in the fourth making it a 10-9.  In the fifth, Abbotsford scored 3 to take a 12-10 lead, but Prince George got 2 back to tie it up in the top of the sixth.  In the bottom of the inning, the Angels needed just one run to win.  Knowing the Angels had it in them to win the game, the Prince George squad used some questionable tactics to try to end the game, but Abbotsford scored the run they needed and won 13-12.
