Another morning game under the hot Ridge Meadows sky brought together an epic battle between Abbotsford and Chilliwack. The game was a consolation game, but it shaped up to be a great battle between two hard fighting teams.

The final day of the Rupert Reed Tournament in Ridge Meadows was the setting for the beginning of this rivalry between the two teams as Abbotsford takes on Chilliwack four times over the next 2 weeks.

The first inning saw Abbotsford’s Ezra “The Cannon” Brittain score the first run of the game and then Abbotsford chucker Jonah Barr struck out Chilliwack’s first three batters to set the tone.

Abbotsford went into the second inning swinging the bats and delivering two more runs while keeping Chilliwack off the scoresheet. A highlight in the top of the second inning was when Abbotsford slugger Liam Fillinger stepped up to the plate with Breandan McLaughlin on base. Liam made solid contact driving the ball right up the first base line and hitting his first Home Run this summer, scoring two runs to give Abbotsford a solid lead.

Chilliwack battled back in the bottom of the third and into the fourth scoring five runs and Abbotsford starting feeling the pressure.
At the end of five innings the teams were locked in a 6-6 tie and so we headed into the sixth with high hopes in both dugouts.

Abbotsford started the sixth inning with the first two batters striking out when long ball hitter Breandan McLaughlin stepped up to the plate and drove a hard line drive over second and then stole two bases to put himself in scoring position. Then Liam Fillinger and Theo Manuel each got on base.
With the score tied in the last inning and with two outs and two strikes against, Chase “Bones” Coleman hits a solid grounder which he turns into a Double scoring the two runs we needed to secure the win.

Chilliwack took to their bats to finish up the sixth only three runs away from victory.

Abbotsford Closer, Udaipal Takhar, was cool under pressure and he retired three of four Chilliwack batters keeping them scoreless in the last frame and giving the Win to Abbotsford.

The game was a lot of fun for Players, Coaches and Parents on both sides and Liam Fillinger walked away with the game MVP.

Another notable moment this weekend had Abbotsford’s Breandan McLaughlin winning the Longest Throw in the Skills Competition with his throw rolling all the way to the home run fence 180′ away; congratulations Breandan!
