Peewee A Championship

It took nine innings to determine the 2013 Peewee A champions but eventually the Abbotsford Blue Jays scored 7 runs  in the top of the ninth to break the deadlock with the Aldergrove White Sox.  The final inning was capped off by an over the fence grand slam by Luke Szmutko and Blake Whalley closed the door pitching the third of three scoreless innings to secure the win.  Key defensive plays by Liam Jarvis and Andy Roh kept the Blue Jays alive in the extra innings and consistent hitting by Brendan Sidall and Michael Bourke allowed the Blue Jays to score a season high 20 runs.

Season Over For Both Spring AA Sides

abbyredThe season is over for both Abbotsford entries into the Spring AA circuit. With a 10-7 loss on Thursday to Vancouver Community, Abby Red couldn’t advance to the semifinals. Nevertheless, they wanted to finish strong and did just that. Red travelled to Chilliwack and pummelled the home team ,needing only 5 innings to take a 13-0 mercy rule victory. Louie Oostenbrug went the distance on the mound in a dominating, complete game shutout.  The Red bats were on fire.  Some highlights included  a broken-bat single to deep left by slugger Massimo Peranio, while Kayden Beauregard and Payton Alexander both hit triples on shots down the right field line.

356-1695-thickboxMeanwhile back at Berry Park, Abby Black entered the game with hope of advancing still. They would need to win over Burnaby and hope for a White Rock loss. They took care of their end of the equation with a 5-4 win at home. However, White Rock won over Cloverdale and knocked Black out of the running.

Clearly the two teams were well sorted at the start, as their playoff finish was almost completely identical, both going 2-2 with equal net runs. A promising start to the year ended with what was a disappointing finish for both Abbotsford teams.  Both looked like sides capable of going all the way but fell short of that goal. Despite that, it was a rewarding and enjoyable spring for both teams.  Congratulations to the players for a fine season of baseball and thanks to the coaches for all their hard work. Good luck to the boys as they now split off into AAA and AA teams for the summer.

Pirates: 2013 Mosquito Cup Champions

Mosquito Cup Championship
Pirates 14
Mariners 4

New ImageReport: The Pirates needed just 5 innings to confirm their spot at the top of the Mosquito ranks with a 14-4 mercy rule victory over a game Mariners squad. The Pirates lost just one game all season, and that type of dominance showed in the Cup Championship game as they raced out to an early lead and never looked like losing. cupactionMariners coaches selected Maguire Wakelyn as the MVP of the game, while the Pirates coaches selected Nick Rabinovitch as the MVP for the Mariners in a losing cause. Both teams are to be credited for a well played game that was a fitting end to an excellent season of Mosquito baseball at Lions Park and Grant Park in Abbotsford in 2013.piratesline

Reds 11
White Sox 8

Report: The Reds beat the White Sox 11-8 in a great Mosquito Shield final.  The White Sox took a 4-1 lead after 2 innings with their pitcher Hunter striking out 3 Reds batters, but Reds pitchers Brent Behm and Luke Lawless held the White Sox batters scoreless over the next 2 innings allowing time for the Reds bats to wake up.  The Reds offense was led by Aidan Hutchinson who was 3-4 with triple and a home run, and Mikey Milne who was 3-3 with a double and a home run.  Chad Pedersen pitched 3 strong innings for the Reds striking out 6 White Sox batters, making a strong impression for a summer league team.  It was a great game to finish the season, and both the Reds and White Sox coaches thank their players and parents for making the season a great one.

Blue Jays 11
Nationals 7

Report: The Blue Jays defeated the Nationals today 11-7. The Blue Jays started Treyson Smith, who pitched 4 solid innings allowing only 1 earned run. Treyson also had the big hit of the day with 3 run home run out of Lions Park. The Nationals kept battling behind the pitching of Denver Kitt and Jack Taylor. After being down 8-3 they had a 4 run fifth inning to close it to 11-7. However the day belonged to the much improved Blue Jays who finished 4th in division and made a tremendous run to finish 3rd overall. Congratulations to the Blue Jays and Nationals for great spring seasons! Good Luck to those players going to play Summerball! GO ANGELS!!
