Sportsmanship & Skill But No Hardware

Over the past weekend the Peewee AA Abby Red squad played at Nanaimo Park in Vancouver in the Victoria Day Weekend Showdown. An opening night loss to the hosts from Vancouver Minor, combined with a flawed tie-breaking system knocked the boys out of contention. Despite two “mercy rule” victories in pool play over Coquitlam and White Rock, the boys failed to secure a semi-final berth for Sunday. Although the team clearly had reason to be disappointed with the process, they came out on Sunday and displayed sportsmanship and skill in a strong final game.

Despite the disappointing lack of hardware to bring home, there were many highlights of note.  In the Thursday night game Massimo Peranio went yard with another home run that cleared the Nanaimo Park fences with ease. Tanner Lee stepped into the Abby lineup to fill in for a large contingent of injured, sick or vacationing players.  A call-up from Peewee A, Tanner fit right in and helped the team with his bat and his glove. On Saturday, Conall Sexton pitched 5 strong innings against White Rock. The lefty was undaunted by the usually potent White Rock bats. He and Spanky Stewart, who was on fire at the plate, led the way towards another victory over the top-ranked White Rock club. And on Sunday in the Skills Competition, the Abby Red throwing relay team of Noah Nickel, Spanky Stewart, Kayden Beauregard and Parker Wakelyn took first place.
